Op vrijdag 21 mei opent Work in residence van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Matt Mullican in een speciaal daartoe ingerichte projectruimte in de Sint Nicolaasstraat 2 te Maastricht (NL).
Op uitnodiging van de Jan van Eyck Academie, Edmond Hustinx stichting en Hedah verzorgt Mullican een jaar lang diverse presentaties, waarbij zijn performances onder hypnose als uitgangspunt fungeren.
Matt Mullican deed zijn eerste performance onder hypnose in 1982 in The Kitchen in New York. Sindsdien zijn talloze performances onder hypnose gevolgd, overal ter wereld, waarvan de meeste ook op video zijn vastgelegd. Het project Work in residence omvat de verzameling van alle video’s en de inventarisatie van alle ‘handelingen’ – huilen, slapen, drinken, lachen,… – tijdens de performances. Op basis van diverse criteria zullen compilatievideo’s worden gemaakt, die zullen worden getoond in de projectruimte, samen met twee- en driedimensionale werken van Matt Mullican.
Work in residence kan gedurende het gehele jaar worden bezocht.
De opening van Work in residence wordt voorafgegaan door een lezing door Math Mullican bij Hedah (Sint Nicolaasstraat 7, Maastricht, NL).

Opening of the exhibition by Jacques Costongs, councillor of arts and culture of the municipality of Maastricht
The project Work in Residence of the American artist Matt Mullican will open on Friday the 21st of May in the especially created and equipped project space, located on the Sint Nicolaasstraat 2 in Maastricht (NL).
Mullican was invited by the Jan van Eyck Academy, the Edmond Hustinx stichting and Hedah to present his work for an entire year, with the performances under hypnosis serving as the starting off point.
Matt Mullican performed his first performance under hypnosis in 1982 in The Kitchen in New York. Since then, his numerous performances under hypnosis have been followed all over the globe, most of which have been captured on video. The project Work in Residence consists of the collection of all video’s and the stock-taking of all ‘actions’ – crying, sleeping, drinking, laughing, etc. – during the performances. Based on diverse criteria these compilation video’s will be made and will be shown in the project space, together with two- and three-dimensional works of Matt Mullican.
You will be able to visit Work in Residence for an entire year.
The opening of Work in Residence will be preceded by a lecture by Matt Mullican in Hedah (Sint Nicolaasstraat 7, Maastricht, NL).
